120 pigs victims of a road accident between Lille and Dunkirk

Out of the 200 pigs in the shipment, 120 pigs were killed in the overturning of a truck transporting live animals.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, June 21, 2022, around 9:30 PM, near the Belgian border, between Lille and Dunkirk, near Hazebrouck, in the municipality of Houtkerque.

Animal rescue operations

While the driver and the passenger, slightly injured, were quickly taken to the Dunkirk hospital, the animal rescue operations lasted several hours and required the intervention of about thirty firefighters.

Accidents involving the transport of live animals

Although this topic is rarely mentioned, road accidents causing the death of live animals are always tragic.

- 09/30/2014: On the A9 motorway, near Narbonne, 300 sheep died in the overturning of a semi-trailer that was carrying 500.

- 08/10/2018: On the A10 motorway, in the Charente Maritime, a truck overturns with 220 pigs, of which only 89 could be saved.

- 04/27/2020: In Brittany, towards St Malo, a truck carrying 200 pigs overturns, causing the loss of more than half of the animals.
