25 Railcars Ablaze in the Heart of Texas Following Ethanol Train Derailment, UN1170
The accident occurred near Highway 287, the major road linking Texas to Montana, on a North-South axis. The incident took place in Oklaunion, at the border with the neighboring state of Oklahoma. The highway had to be closed due to the risk of explosion from the ethanol tankers. The train was en route to Fort Worth, in the suburbs of Dallas.
The causes of the ethanol train derailment are not yet determined.
A Freight Train of 98 Cars, Owned by BNSF Company
The train consisted of 98 cars. 28 of them derailed and 25 caught fire. The train belongs to the company BNSF: Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway, a class 1 company, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR). This classification is based on revenue. Class 1 corresponds to a revenue of over $500 million.
Massive Rescue Efforts to Control the Fire of the 25 Ethanol Wagons and Limit the Risk of Grass Fires
Rescue services quickly arrived at the scene, notably from Sheppard military base, the largest training center for the United States Air Force. Foam trucks were called from all over Texas.
With no injuries reported, the main danger lies in potential grass fires, which could be fueled by strong winds.
Cleanup is expected to last several days.
