Hot transport: 3 injured in an accident

Hot transport: The ADR regulations.

This Friday, on the RN88, an 81-year-old driver, dazzled by the sun, veered to the left, facing an oncoming semi-trailer. The truck driver tried to avoid her but ended up overturning on the road, causing 3 injuries including both drivers.

The semi-trailer was carrying hot mix asphalt, which spread over the road. A rapid pumping intervention was necessary to limit the risk of the material hardening as it cooled.

Even if the products are not considered dangerous according to ADR standards, they must comply with ADR regulations if they meet certain temperature criteria during the transport phase. Bitumens, transported at 150° and 200°, are thus shipped under ADR. The classification of asphalts may also be subject to ADR.

UN3256: Hot transported liquid, FLAMMABLE, N.O.S., at a temperature above its flash point - Class 3

UN3257: Hot transported liquid, N.O.S., at a temperature below its flash point, but above 100° - Class 9

UN3258: Hot transported solid, at a temperature equal to or above 240° - Class 9

 Vehicle Placarding:

The mark for materials transported at high temperatures must be affixed for vehicles or containers, for liquids > 100°C and solids > 240°C. These marks must be affixed:

- On each side and at the rear for vehicles

- On each side and at each end for containers or mobile tanks.
