6 Dead and 22 Injured, Including the Unconscious Driver, During an Illegal Dumping Operation into a Canal in Surat, Gujarat, Western India
The driver illegally discharged the contents of his chemical tanker into a canal. Toxic vapors escaped and the wind spread them to the surrounding industrial areas.
26 workers from a nearby dyeing factory fell unconscious and 6 of them died, along with 2 dogs. The victims were transferred to the new Surat hospital and placed on ventilators. The Indian authorities evacuated the area.
An investigation is underway and authorities are waiting for the driver to regain consciousness for more information. A complaint for manslaughter has been filed against the driver and the owner of the chemical waste. Article 304 of the Indian Penal Code, which is the subject of the complaint, provides for 10 years of imprisonment for manslaughter with intent to harm and awareness of one's actions. A complaint has also been filed for criminal conspiracy (Article 120b).
