Unloading: Leakage of 800 liters of sulfuric acid on the road, this Friday, 15/10/2021, at Lyon Part-Dieu.

A handling error led to the fall of an IBC of sulfuric acid during the unloading phase in front of the Part-Dieu heating plant, Cours Lafayette. 800 liters were spilled on the roadway and into the sewers.

This handling error was compounded by "anarchic" parking on the public road, which will lead to an investigation, according to the prefecture.

4 people were injured, including a cyclist at the time of the drum's fall.

The intervention teams proceeded by dilution with 60,000 liters of water, for evacuation through the sewers and the purification plant.

The intervention lasted just over 3 hours.

It is incomprehensible to still see drivers allowing themselves to bypass the ADR prescriptions and the Dangerous Goods Transport Order of 2009.

It is time to act at the level of carriers and their drivers. Too few have so far committed to the development of a Safety Culture. The control of subcontractor safety, especially in small structures, is a real issue. Transport companies must embark on this approach as industrial companies did with their subcontractors many years ago.

The current shortage of drivers is not a valid excuse for not respecting and enforcing the various regulations.

In addition to Dangerous Goods Safety Advisors, Occupational Risk Prevention Officers are there to support these small structures. It is up to the clients to demand the implementation of continuous improvement processes in Safety.
